First Christian Church is a growing and changing community of Christians with a long history in Topeka.  New people are continuously being welcomed into the fellowship and leadership of the congregation.

People of many different denominational backgrounds are attracted to the open and inclusive fellowship of this congregation where uniformity of belief, appearance, economic status, life style or behavior is not required.  All who seek God's will for their lives are invited to "Come grow with us."

Our Mission Statement

First Christian Church is a congregation that welcomes all, nurtures faith in God, cares for others and celebrates belonging to the body of Christ.

Core Values
bulletACCEPTANCE OF ALL - We welcome all people to our faith community.
bulletNURTURING FAITH - At First Christian Church we strengthen our faith and grow spiritually through regular Bible study, daily prayer and worshipping God.
bulletCARING FOR OTHERS - Caring for others is at the foundation of the Christian faith, lived out by sharing God's love and compassion with people in our congregation and throughout the world.
bulletJOY OF BELONGING - We place a high priority on helping people discover the joy of relating to one another.

Beliefs and Practices

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is an ecumenical and evangelical fellowship of congregationally governed churches. We have no test of fellowship other than a simple affirmation that Jesus Christ is Savior and Lord.

Historically, our stance has been expressed in such sayings as:

"In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity."

"We are not the only Christians but Christians only."

"Where the Scriptures speak, we speak; where the Scriptures are silent, we are silent."

Of course, people may differ as to the essentials, or regarding how the Scriptures should be interpreted.  Our practice is to respect the conscience of each person, and to encourage him or her in the study of the Bible and their pursuit of truth.

We celebrate two ordinances - instituted by Jesus Christ

Baptism - an act by which a believer enters into the church universal.

bulletFor mature individuals who are old enough to make their own decisions.
bulletBy immersion in water - the accepted New Testament practice.
bulletA public confession of faith in Jesus Christ and commitment to discipleship.
bulletSymbolic of Christ's death, burial and resurrection, and of faith in life to come.

The Lord's Supper (Communion) - the heart of worship.

bulletCelebrated in remembrance of Christ and Christ's life on Earth.
bulletA time of fellowship - drawing the congregation closer together.
bulletA time of thanksgiving for forgiveness of sins and renewal of life.
bulletA dedication to Christ's way.

Communion  is celebrated every Sunday and during special occasions.  All Christians, of any denomination, are welcome to participate.
